Adopt a Dune
Adopt a Dune is a service-learning program designed for 3rd-6th graders as a follow up field trip to the Bay to Dunes program. Classes are invited to return to the dunes two or more times throughout the school year to remove invasive plant species from their adopted dune. By restoring dune habitats, students will learn about native plant communities, the natural and social history of the Samoa peninsula, and the introduction and impact of invasive plant species, especially European beachgrass. Students will also experience the positive impact people can have on natural places as they reclaim habitat for native plants and witness changes in their dune over time. Adopt a Dune is aligned with California State Content Standards. If you would like a list of the content standards met through this program, please contact us.
Classes participating in Adopt a Dune are expected to complete supplementary classroom activities to reflect and build on their experiences with habitat restoration. Teachers are encouraged to develop their own activities with their students, or may contact Friends of the Dunes for a list of suggestions.
The field trip is free, and bus funding is available for schools that need it. Field Trips typically last about 2 hours, and the days and times are flexible.
