Annual Lupine Bash

The Annual Lupine Bash is one of the largest restoration events coordinated by Friends of the Dunes and takes place every February at the Lanphere Dunes Unit of the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The tradition of "striking a blow for biodiversity" is believed to have begun back in 1978 by a group of concerned community members.

30 years later the annual lupine bash continues. The population of yellow bush lupines has declined dramatically at the Lanphere Dunes but efforts must persist until the seed bank is completely diminished. The event occurs in February so as to remove all of the shrubs before they are able to produce flowers and more seeds.
