The 2008 Ocean Day event in brought over 750 Humboldt County elementary school students to the South Spit of the Humboldt Bay for a day of restoration (invasive plant pulling) and a trash clean-up. After the clean-up, students, teachers, chaperones and event volunteers gather at the beach to create an aerial art design with their bodies on the beach. Once everyone is in place, a Coast Guard helicopter flies over and takes a photo. Sponsored by the California Coastal Commission, this event takes place in various locations throughout California on the same day and at the same time each year, making it a state-wide clean-up effort. The program is geared for 3rd-6th grades, but open to any grade that would like to participate.
